Report of Panel Discussion on the Supreme Court Judgment on Passive Euthanasia on 24.08.18. at The International Centre Goa.

V. M. Salgaocar College of Law, Society for Youth Development, Sanjeevan Naguesh-Ponda and The International Centre Goa conducted a Panel Discussion on the Supreme Court Judgment on Passive Euthanasia: Socio- Medico-Legal dimension on 24th August 2018 at ICG, Dona Paula. The panel comprised of experts from their respective fields. The first Speaker was Dr. M. R. K. Prasad, Principal of V.M. Salgaocar College of Law. Dr. Prasad began by explaining Article 21 of the Constitution and touched upon various Supreme Court Judgments which highlighted the right to die with dignity. The second speaker was Advocate Parag Rao, who explained the Directions of Supreme Court in the Common Cause Judgment. The third Speaker was Dr. Shekhar Salkar who emphasized on the practicality faced by doctors in the hospitals when patients or relatives demand to be euthanized and concluded by a conundrum faced by him as a doctor where he didn't know whether the interest of the patient should be prioritized or the interest of the family members. The fourth speaker Ms. Madhuri Rao, a social worker, spoke about her personal experience while dealing with cases of passive Euthanasia. Last speaker of the session, Prof. Agnelo V. Afonso, Professor of Philosophy- Goa University highlighted the dilemmas that rise up in Legal and Medical aspects with regard to right to die with dignity. The event was chaired by Dr. Pushkar, Director, ICG. Prof. Bhakti Naik of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law, delivered the vote of thanks.
